The last stage in metalwork and fabrication is the polishing of the finished product to a matt or high shine. The finish of the metal depends upon the end purpose for which it is intended e.g. chrome for car parts will be polished to a high shine, whilst brushed silver door handles will have a matt finish.
In order for manufacturers to set the polishing equipment to give the appropriate gloss finish, they must first ascertain the gloss level of the finished product that they require; this is done using a gloss meter to measure the gloss units. Once the required gloss units are ascertained, each metal product in the batch can be finished to the same standard.
The gloss meter can then be used to monitor the products as they are finished to ensure that they are all finished the same; this is part of quality control.
