The printing industry is very large and includes everything from tabloid newspapers to glossy magazines and advertising flyers. The finished products are very much created to be visually impressive, therefore the ink used to create the publications must be of the correct type in terms of colour, quality and gloss level.
The level of gloss used in the publications will differ depending on their audience and product they are promoting. For example, a newspaper will have a lot more matt print than a poster promoting a circus. Gloss meters are used to obtain and measure the correct level of gloss in the ink for the specific publication. They are also then used to ensure that each finished product in the batch has the same gloss level so that none can be deemed as substandard.
